Max's Recommendations
by Max Montel

There are not many other directing books that I've read that are as immediately and practically useful as this one for situations that do come up in rehearsals. Many books, and some excellent ones among them, discuss artistic approach, different theories of theater, and basic approaches to rehearsal, but leave many specifics out as unteachable. Fine, but it's nice to have some straightforward advice on making techs run smoothly, or dealing with an angry frustrated actor (Note 73: "If an actor abuses you publicly, stay calm..."). This book is also filled with useful tips on approaching the script (53: "Every scene is a chase scene..."), and staging (95: "If it moves, the eye will follow..."). It probably isn't the only book on directing you'll ever need or want, but it makes an extremely valuable addition to any collection.
